sajnos ismet angolul, de hatha valakit erdekel, mik a fobb kerdesek a
muanyagok ujrafelhasznalasaval kapcsolatban, es hogy itt hogy allnak
hozza a kerdeshez. (apropo: mi a jo szo magyarul a 'recycling'-re? az
ujrafekhasznalas az nem jo; az 're-use'. OK, ujrahasznositas -- de amikor
a haziasszony bedobja a papir-kukaba a mult heti ujsagot, akkor o azert

TASK FORCE CONVENED TO STUDY PLASTICS DILEMMA
The Ecology Center, a non-profit environmental organization operating in
Berkeley since 1969, has convened a Plastics Task Force to sort out the
complex and controversial issues surrounding the recycling of plastics. The
group will study the economic, practical and environmental implications of
disposing of plastic packaging, and look at the feasibility of picking up
plastics curbside.
In recent years, endless categories of plastics have proliferated and
entered the waste stream as a result of an industry shift from glass, paper
and metal to plastic packaging. Plastics packaging has become increasingly
controversial in recent years as negative Impacts stemming from the
manufacture and disposal of various types of plastics packaging have come to
light. Public interest in addressing solutions, particularly through
recycling is strong, but the discussion is surrounded by a great deal of
confusion on the part of consumers. In part, the confusion stems from the
misleading "chasing arrows" designations on containers, assigning numbers to
types of resin used. The chasing arrows (arrows continuous in a triangle
around the number) connote when in fact recycling options for many consumer
plastics do not exist .
Several Bay Area communities currently offer recycling options for limited
types of plastic packaging, primarily PET and HDPE ( soft drink bottles and
milk jugs). In Berkeley, Community Conservation Centers (CCC) accepts PET and
HDPE at both donation centers at Martin Luther King Way and Dwight and Second
and Gilman. CCC is currently evaluating a program for purchasing plastic at
the BuyBack.
The City of Berkeley has requested that a plastics plan be presented to the
City Council by City staff in May, with the issue of the feasibility of
curbside pickup of plastics a primary consideration. The Ecology Center, a
pioneer in curbside recycling in the U.S., now operates Berkeley's curbside
program under contract with the City, and is being asked to address the
feasibility of adding plastics to their curbside program.
Representatives from Berkeley's recycling organizations including Urban Ore,
Community Conservation Centers and City of Berkeley staff, will join the
Ecology Center to explore such issues as:
* current markets for post-consumer resins
* trends in packaging materials
* economic viability of curbside pick-up of plastics, including surveys of
communities in the Bay Area currently picking up plastics
* the environmental implications of plastics recycling and manufacture of
plastic packaging
* end uses of recycled resin, such as plastic lumber, and environmental
implications of those products
* social and environmental implications of the export of plastic waste
as well as project cost and operational matters associated with curbside
pick-up of plastics. Consultation with the academic community, environmental
organizations, plastics industry experts and public solid waste management
agencies will provide much of the information the task force analyzes.
A report with findings and recommendations will be published by the task
force at the completion of the study. Interim reports required by the City
for its planning efforts will be provided to the plastics subcommittee of
Berkeley Solid Waste Management Commission.

More than 25 local and national non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have
joined Eleg, the Hungarian Energy Efficiency Campaign sponsored by
IIEC-Europe as part of its regional capacity-building program. The
campaign was officially launched on 11 May in Budapest by Margaretha de
Boer, the Dutch Minister for the Environment. The word "Eleg" means
"enough" in Hungarian and symbolizes both the inefficiency of the
Hungarian energy sector as well as the fact that there is enough energy
available in Hungary as long as it is used efficiently.

Minister de Boer addressed the importance and opportunities for saving
energy in Hungary. The Hungarian coordinator, Ada Amon, described the
scope and goals of the capacity-building effort, which will include
activities such as public information campaigns, coalition building,
strategy development, and training for Hungarian NGOs.
