Hello...
I am searching for information about musical theatre in Hungary. I have
recordings of the Budapest casts of the following
musicals: EVITA, CATS, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING
TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT,
LES MISERABLES, NUNSENSE. I also have recordings of two original Hungarian
musicals: ANNA KARENINA and
SZTARCSINALOK. I have developed a liking to the Hungarian language and have
grown fond of the Hungarian actors and
actresses on the recordings.

I would like to know if anyone has an English translation to
SZTARCZINALOK...all I know is that it is a rock opera about the
Roman emperor Nero.

Also, is Rock Szinhaz an organization or some sort? Is there a way to write
to the actors and actresses for their autographs?

Thank you very much. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I do not yearn for the past. However, I do point out
any positive points which were overlooked. The blanket
dismissal of 40 years as if there was nothing
achieved or even enjoyed, is a mistake,
for which all political parties are paying at the moment.

I am not any sort of goat, but an averagely pleasant
or unpleasant human being, and this fact has nought to
do with your or my opinions.

According to the Hungarian etymological dictionary, 'Servus' as a
greeting first appears in Hungarian in 1815. It is of course the Latin
word for 'servant'.

The immediate source for Hungarian may have been German in part, but it's
hard to tell: Latin was used widely in Hungary as a lingua franca in
church, school, jurisprudence, government, and the basic idea is rather
international: cf. English 'Your humble servant' (servus humillius),
Italian 'ciao' (which evolves from 'schiavo', 'slave'), or Spanish
'servidor', used in various combinations to this day as a closing formula
in letterws. In Hungarian usage, as in South German, 'servus' develops
into an informal, second-person greeting. In Hungarian only, the word
takes a second-person plural ending, -tok, when greeting two or more friends
informally: 'szervusztok'. This latter development shows that the
speakers were no longer aware of the original meaning of the Latin.

Hi Arthur,

I actually starred in English language version of "Evita" in Budapest with
the Rock Theatre about 2 summers ago. Fun bunch of actors. Yes, they are
an organization, and they're phone number if I recall is 1116405 and
1325509. Their address; VI. Nagymezo u. 19.

I'm not sure that they accept requests for autographs, but it's worth a try.

=G=

Ps: They're going through some tough economic time right now, and their
future is uncertain. So if you want those autographs, it'd be best to
write soon :-)

Don't humor yourself. Evil requires some level of inspiration, of which
you are manifestly incapable of mustering. And the first part of your
little screed amused me no end. If anyone has had trouble learning
anything from the last forty years, it's you.

Hello and help

I am a professor of management at Niagara Univrsity in New York. I
am taking a class of MBA students to study for a week in Berlin in
August and I need help finding money for a Hungarian national who is
a student in my management class. She currently is in the United
States but will be in Hungary in August, the month of the seminar.

The seminar is dedicated to international management and the
transition from planned to market economies. She is on scholarship at
Niagara University but the university will not pay the 750 to 1000
dollars for her to attend the seminar.

Does anyone know where she might apply for a grant or scholarship
dedicated to Hungarian students studying abroad. The cost includes
the seminar a week stay in Berlin, food, and transit from Hungary to
Berlin

My email is
or 716 286-8179

Many thanks

I'm sure if you search in university libraries, you will find some books
about Hungary. I did and even read some, which were interesting.

Talk to the librarian in the sociology department of your local library and
see if they have a section on nonprofit organizations and foundations. If
they have a half-ways decent collection you should be able to find indices
of many of local and regional foundations, besides these big ones, to which
to apply. The librarian may even be able to refer you to a specific
specialized library usually called a "grantsmanship" or "nonprofit
development" center where you can obtain a variety of services in helping
you find places to apply and filling out the applications and such. Good luck.

+ - health care reforms in the U.S.--thanks for the help (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Dear Group;

I've been pretty busy this past few weeks, and had a new medical situation
develop which will require surgery possibly as soon as next week. However,
I wanted to say thank you to you all for your help on the health care
reforms issue for the U.S.. Those, including you, Joe Szalai, who gave me
information about their own countries, both the successes and the problems
have provided an invaluable service. Representative Bill Thomas was
impressed by the interest and the cooperation and was very keen to read the
summary, and does expect to use the information. We had a long talk about
many aspects of the situation at Ben Brink's fundraiser.

Although this is very preliminary, what is likely to happen is a national
system in which funds come from both federal and state sources to cover all
those people not covered by private insurance. This will be an expanded
"medicare" program. However, the implementation/administration will be the
states--rather like Canada. Private insurance companies will be required to
cover all conditions, and have rates that may be affected by individual
responsibilities, but not genetics, or preconditions. Some types of
insurance companies may not be allowed to provide medical insurance, or may
be required to divest themselves of those divisions to prevent losses from
other divisions being covered by largesse from a "captive public."

Insurance with a particular company will be transferable, and will be able
to be held in retirement.

These are the major, general topics that were covered in our discussion, in
which both candidate Ben Brink, and Representative Tom Campbell also
participated.

Again, thank you all, very much for your help and interest. I'll keep you
posted as legislation develops.

I'm forwarding the following query from the Habsburg list.

I have received the following from a US Army Major stationed with the
peace-keeping troops in Hungary. Is there a Habsburg subscriber who might
be able to answer his question about the informal greeting mentioned below?

Karen Hobbs
> -------------------------------------------------------------

Next Monday I begin studying Hungarian here with the University of
Maryland. The University of Maryland is one of three colleges offering
courses here in Hungary on US installations. I am really looking forward
to it!

I also discovered something interesting. Here in Hungary there is an
informal greeting that is pronounced "sair-voos". [spelled szervusz--Ed.]
That is very similar to the pronunciation of the Southern German and
Austrian greeting of "Servus". [Latin for servant--Ed.] I am curious as to
the origin of the word, and whether or not it is a recent lingual
acquisition here in Hungary or if it goes back to the Empire days.
