I wonder what's keeping Dr Pellionisz from filing his famous lawsuit
against the IMF. Surely no amount of heckling on the Net can prevent him
from filing the darn thing. Here in America you have a god-given right
to file a lawsuit every day of the week if you want to. You also have
the right to pick a street corner -- any street corner -- and keep ranting
and raving about the coming Armageddon till you are blue in the face.

If the lawsuit is as crucial as you say it is, if it is really the key to
national survival, then we don't have a moment to lose. Every day counts.
Time is of the essence. Just think of the loss of interest on the hundreds
of billions you are set to win. With interest compounded daily, it must
add up to a nice bit of change. It would certainly pay for fixing that
irritating Caps Lock key. The one that keeps getting stuck all the time.
Can drive a man nuts.

So how come all we hear is talk, talk, talk, and the lawsuit is still going
nowhere? What can the matter be? Lack of patriotic zeal? Indecisiveness?
Legal incompetence? Did Dr Endrey misplace the address of the Supreme
Court? Do I begin to smell sabotage?!?

Go ahead. File it. Please. Don't let anyone stop you. You had all the
foreplay you need, and more. So go for it. Let the ruling classes tremble.
Remember, you have nothing to lose but your chains. And you have a world
to win. So file it already, and quit yakking about it.

It seems that the Chicago Democrats were responsible for the results
of the last census in Transilvania, which must've included the dead
amongst the living just like in a good old fashion Cook County
election. Unless of course, in the same Chicago Democratic tradition,
the Hungarians were "counted"... early and often!

Just nitpicking: Even me, whose first language isn't English,
can see the two ( highlighted ) errors in the mail supposedly
from the White House. It could be typo of course :-).
Also I have to agree with the notion that the US ( or any other
so called "First World democratic country ) is not a democratic
society. We all know that democracy existed only in ancient Greece
where the members of 'demos' ( the people ) were equal of course,
while the work was done by a huge slave base. Now where are the
slaves in our time? Just look around the planet and you will see.
Enough for today.Maybe my messages are monitored also :-).

Dear Colleague,

Today is the last day on which you can still speak up for the rights of the
Seklers. Today you can still join our nation-wide effort to influence the
outcome of the Clinton-Iliescu meeting. As the meeting is scheduled for
Tuesday, our goal is to flood the White House with faxes and telephone calls
on Monday. This way, we hope to achieve, that before the meeting on Tuesday,
Mr. Clinton will be informed, that the dominant demand in the previous day's
mail, was the demand for Hungarian autonomy in Transylvania.

Below, I have attached a form letter addressed to the President and copied to
the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Senator Dodd. Please send your fax TO
BOTH. Please, also make a few phone calls to friends, family members,
colleagues, even your students and ask them to do the same. What is a few
minutes for you, can mean the cultural survival of the Seklers. THIS
OPPORTUNITY WILL NOT RETURN!
With best regards: Bela Liptak

The Honorable Bill Clinton
President of the United States
(FAX: 202-456-2461, TEL: 202-456-1414, E-Mail: )

Dear Mr. President,

According to the 1990 census, 1.64 million Hungarian-Americans live in the
United States. As all Americans, we too vote as Democrats, Republicans, and
Independents, but when it comes to the cultural survival of the indigenous
Hungarian population of Transylvania, we vote as members of one family, we
vote for the party which shows more understanding and offers more protection
to our brethren.

Dear Mr. President, we would like to ask, that on Tuesday, when you meet
President Iliescu of Romania, please make all your agreements conditional on
the following:

1) The restoration of Hungarian autonomy in Transylvania.
2) The repeal of the 1995 "Language Law", which, if not rescinded, would
destroy one of Europe's oldest and best school system.
3) The returning of Catholic and Reformed Church properties. (The
nationalized posessions of other churches have already been returned.)

Mr. President, the indigenous Hungarian population of Romania is larger than
the total population of Bosnia. We support your policy of guaranteeing
autonomy to all ethnic groups in Bosnia and we respectfully ask you to extend
that policy to all ethnic minorities in Central Europe, including Europe's
largest minority: the Hungarians.

Respectfully yours,
(Name, address, title)

This must be _very_ recently, because in 1992, HDUR got about 7% of the
votes, and 2.5 million is more than 10% of Romania's population. Or,
maybe, some Hungarians voted for PUNR...

says:

Romania
Population: 23,181,415 (July 1994 est.)
Ethnic divisions: Romanian 89.1%, Hungarian 8.9%

Calculator (/usr/openwin/bin/calctool)
says:

23181415 * 0.089 =~ 2.063 mil.

OH Please!!!! Will people quit arguing the numbers bit, no one is
districting anything, and the point is that it is pointless to do so,
anyone who has studied demography in this region knows that censuses
(especially self-reporting) will always be skewed on the nationality
question.

1) Let's remember they are all Romanian citizens.

2) That the Romanian government (no matter which ex-communist is in
charge) should have an interest in keeping the people of it's most
productive region happy, no matter what ethnicity and language they
choose.

3) And that outside observers have an interest in making sure laws that
are on the books are more than mere showpieces for NATO/EU leadership.

Well Gyury, if I ever run for the Romanian Senate and win a seat, I will
introduce a law to allow & encourage Hungarians to emigrate to
Transylvania, from Hungary and even more so the USA.
It seems the place is very special in the Hungarian psyche, I think we may
be able to get the new emigre's to do something productive over there, and
make everybody happy !

Personaly I would have preffered that the school system not be meddled with.
The present legislature in Romania seems to be able to do mostly harm in
many other areas.

+ - Insult to Bela Bartok's memory (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

The President of Romania will meet with President Clinton on Tuesday, the
26th of September. He is coming to obtain a billion dollars in aid and the
technology to manufacture Cobra attack helicopters in Romania. He wants these
in return for the progress Romania has made on the road towards democracy:
guaranteeing ethnic tolerance, human rights and cultural diversity in his
multi-ethnic state. An example of the conditions prevailing in Romania is
given below:

SEPTEMBER 12, 1995: The Hungarian Opera in Cluj posts showbills in Hungarian,
Romanian and English, announcing a 10-day Bela Barok anniversary.
SEPTEMBER 20: Major Gh. Funar sends a crane and removes the Hungarian
language announcement-ribbon from the facade of the opera.
SEPTEMBER 21: The director of the Hungarian Opera, Gabor Simon, returns the
Hungarian language ribbon.
SEPTEMBER 22: The mayor once again removes, the director once again returns
the ribbon. As a response the mayor imposes a 2 million ley fine and requests
the dismissal of the director. Simultaneously with that, the telephone lines
to the opera are also cut.
SEPTEMBER 23 (TODAY): The director turns to higher authorities requesting the
enforcement of the laws, which guarantee the language rights of minorities
and in failing to receive assistance, contemplates the cancellation of the
10-day Bartok program.

It is important to know, that 1) the indigenous Hungarian population of
Romania exceeds the total population of Bosnia, 2) that Hungarian autonomy
which survived even under Communism, has not been restored in Romania, 3)
that a new law been passed this year, which, if enforced, will destroy the
500 years old Hungarian school system, 4) that the Hungarian churches are the
only churches in Romania, who's properties have not been returned.

Therefore, President Clinton should tell President Iliescu, that if Romania
wants to enter Europe or if she wants American help, she should guarantee
ethnic rights, cultural autonomy for all minorities (including the Jews and
the Romas) and should terminate the operation of the language police.

100 - 89.1 - 8.9 = 98
23181415 * 0.02 = 463,628 other minorities in Romania.
That's ludicrous. There are more gypsies than this, not considering
Turks, Armenians, Germans, Ukrainians etc...
